Barcelona, a warm, lively and cosmopolitan city with a Mediterranean touch, is located on the shore of the north east coast of Spain. It is one of the most visited cities in Europe, and offers any kind of visitor a variety of things, being beaches or an amazing atmosphere to a very rich history and architecture including the still unfinished Gaudi creation Sagrada Familia (Temple of the Holy Family).
Right in the city centre, on Paseo de Gracia, you can see another two very interesting buildings from architecture Antoni Gaudi: Casa Battlo and La Pedrera, or Casa Mila, a veritable abstract monumental sculpture formed by organic shapes.
Paseo the Gracia is also home of the most expensive and exclusive shops, such as Louis Vuitton, Loewe, Hugo Boss, Caroline Herrera, Dolce Gabbana, inbetween tapas bars and restaurants with ample street terraces.
If you fancy museums, then you should not forget the Picasso and Miro museums as well as the MACBA in the Raval district among many others.
The Gothic Quarter with its many narrow streets full of shops and bars surrounding the Cathedral is another worthwhile visit.
At the Olympic Harbour with its genuine twin towers, built for the 1992 Olympic Games, you can enjoy Mediterranean and International cuisine at any of the well known restaurants, go for a walk, ride a bike or just sunbath on the beach, swim or surf. At night there are many cocktail bars open.
You should not miss the Montjuïc fountains with its cascades and smaller fountains, installed at several points of Avinguda Maria Cristina with the beautiful, huge Palau Nacional Museum in the back. Specially in the evening you should see the fountains, when some days of the week the water changes colours continuously according to the music you can listen to at the same time.
Another highlight of Barcelona is the Ramblas, a wide street with many small shops, bars, restaurants and hotels on both sides, while you can see flower shops and animal stalls along the pedestrian area, which runs down from Plaza Catalunya to the Columbus statue in front of the sea.
To have a nice view over Barcelona, you should not miss the park and garden Parc Güell, built by Gaudi as well, or go to the Tibidabo fair park with green areas around.
Off Barcelona: Interesting visits in the south include the Penedes wine region, the well known coastal town of Sitges and the Costa Dorada with the city of Tarragona. In the north you should see the famous monestary Montserrat surrounded by mountains, the Costa Brava villages and beaches, and inland the imposing Pyrenees mountains. Cities to visit are Girona, Figueras with its Dali Museum and the nearby countries France and Andorra.
Transport: Easy access to Barcelona is possible by car, train, plane and boat. Some access options are north from France and Girona, west from Madrid and south from Valencia. Barcelona is a popular stop or departure point for cruise vacations, and a connection point for the Balearic Islands Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza.
